Belabela Village received clean water filters from Give Clean Water and now drinks clean, bacteria free water every day.

January 12th, 2013

In December the Fiji Islands were hit with the worst cyclone seen in 20 years. Fiji is beginning to dig out of the devastation and access the damage. Fiji is often hit with devastating cyclones that cause massive problems with the water supply, specifically in the rural villages. Most rural villages get their water from nearby rivers. These rivers are often full of E-Coli, Leptospirosis, and sometimes Typhoid bacteria, causing regular diarrhea outbreaks, and some deaths.

In October, we worked with Dr. Solva from the beautiful Coral Coast of the big island of Fiji. We talked with Dr. Solva about the effects that contamination in the rural water supply. Dr. Solva shared with us that in last two weeks, she had 2 children brought to her clinic, dead on arrival from severe cases of diarrhea. The following interview was filmed while crossing the very river where Belabela village draws its drinking water. Belabela Village received clean water filters from Give Clean Water and now drinks clean, bacteria free water every day.

Unfortunately, the rural areas of Fiji face these problems on a regular basis. Belabelo village is one of the many success stories in Fiji where Give Clean Water has provided life-changing clean water filters to every village family.

As we continue our work in 2013 and get more filters into the rural villages, we know that less families will face the devastating loss of their child due to lack of clean water.

Merewai talks with Sheri Larson about Benefits of Clean Water

January 12th, 2013

On a recent Give Clean Water trip to Fiji, our team made a follow up visit to the village of Nabila. These follow ups, done in partnership with the Ministry of Health, are part of Give Clean Water’s commitment to providing sustainable clean drinking water to the country of Fiji.

While in Nabila, we visited with Merewai who is a mother and grandmother in the village. She explained how the water they used to drink came from the tap and caused diarrhea and some throat irritations from the sediment. She now filters her water every day using her filter system installed by Give Clean Water volunteers in June 2012. All of Merewai’s family’s water borne sicknesses have been eliminated. They are happy with the change in their families health, and grateful to Volcom and Tavarua Island for providing funding for these life changing filters.

Thousands of families like Merewani’s are waiting for help right now. You have the power to do something! Make a donation and help us provide more families with access to clean water. With your help, every grandmother and grandchild will be free from water-borne illness. Join us!

During a lay day in the Fiji Pro Surf Contest a team from Volcom Surf, Tavarua, and Transworld Surf partnered with GCW to provide 150 filters for two villages. This was a wonderful opportunity to see if partnerships like this were feasible, and to start a new trend in pro-surf sustainability.

GCW wants to cover Fiji’s entire populace in the next 10 years. “This is a tangibly solvable problem as Fiji only has a little over 800,000 people in the country,” Darrell Larson, GCW founder explained. GCW says it has so far reached 40,000 of Fiji’s 890,000 inhabitants. GCW is eyeing future expansion in Tonga, Samoa, and Indonesia. “I’d love to develop our partnership [with the World Tour] and really help make sustainable surf tourism a major factor around the world.” Read more here
